Show City Council Approves Tax Study Group The Moab City Council Tuesday Tues-day night approved the appointment ap-pointment of a citizen committee com-mittee to study and make a recommendation on whether he City should continue the jse of a one-half per com gross business license tax, or eliminate it and make up the revenue loss through some other tax source. The one-half per cent tax now being collected in Moao City has been questioned ifrom time to time as to Its .legality, but has been used here for over ten years. It provides about one-third cf the operating revenues for Moab City. Legality of the tax is questionable, according to tritics, since merchants an? allowed to pass the tax along al-ong to customers. If the tax were eliminat-zod, eliminat-zod, a portion of the loss in revenue would undoubtedly .have to be made up wi'h more property tax. J The committee approved Tuesday night will be head-xd head-xd by Moab auto dealer, ,Jack Payne. It consists of .Ralph Miller, Jr., Donald Knowles, Sam Taylor, Lor-cn Lor-cn Rob'Ttson, J. G. Pinkcr-,ton, Pinkcr-,ton, Mickey Davis, K. E. McDougald, Ray Branscom, .Kenn-th Beach, Helen Taylor, Tay-lor, Aileen Scharf, Virginia Johnson, Mary Pogue and .Dorothy Hoffman. In other action, the Council Coun-cil approved the purchase of a new animal control van from Gaither Chevrolet, for 2,121. J. W. Holland was appointed ap-pointed to a term on the Jtecrcation Board expiring ,in January, 1971. Mr. Hof-.land Hof-.land replaces J. Curtis Robertson Ro-bertson who resigned. A decision was made ic go ahead with the construction construc-tion of a new comfort station sta-tion at the park and a hou-.e for pumping equipment at the new city water well. Councilmen granted Bunnell Bun-nell Dodge Co. permission to connect five lots on Spanish Span-ish Valley Drive to the ma n water transmission line running run-ning from the spring area to storage tanks in the City. A number of similar connections con-nections had been ajiproved in the past. Due to the difficulties dif-ficulties involved, however, it was decided that no further fur-ther connections would hi allowed in the Spanish Valley Val-ley area above the pressure zone on the line. Mayor Winford Bunce and Councilman Jack West reported re-ported that they had met Saturday with new police chief, Ray Sizemore, wh i would be taking over his duties du-ties here about the middle of next week. |
