Show Meeting on Air Service Scheduled in Corfei Representatives of over thirty communities in Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico have been invited to a meeting scheduled for Friday, Oct. 13 in Cortez, Colo., to discuss the future of regularly scheduled commercial com-mercial aviation in their communities. The meeting has been called by the Grand County Economic Development com-. com-. mittee, and Director Don Hoffman stated that response re-sponse from the invited communities has been very good. Mr. Hoffman said that it was determined some time ago that the problems Moab is currently facing in retaining commercial airline air-line service, were problems that all small communities in the Four Corners area will be facing at some time in the future. "Our response from many of the communities commun-ities has indicated that they are aware of our particular problem, and feel that they might be facing similar problems in the future," he said. The Cortez meeting Wiii seek to organize a four-state four-state committee of community com-munity representatives that would elect its own officers and begin a unified effort to improve, if possible, air transportation opportunities opportunit-ies in these states. Many of the communities currently current-ly being served by regional airlines are boarding not many more passengers than Moab has boarded in past years. Problems to be discussed dis-cussed will include current and future policies of the Civil Aeronautics Board, attitudes of regional airlines air-lines relative to subsidized subsidiz-ed routes, evolution of the third level carrier airline and avalability of proper types of equipment. Many of the subjects are currently being debated by various agencies, and a firm policy for the future has not yet evolved, Mr. Hoffman stated. stat-ed. We would hope that by a unified effort of communities com-munities with similar problems, pro-blems, we might be in a position to help influence future policy, he said. The Four Corners Regional Region-al Commission developed a transportation study a number num-ber of years ago which points out the growth of economic opportunities as being directly tied to the availability of commercial transportation. Certainly any loss of what is now being enjoyed would have a detrimental det-rimental effect on the development de-velopment of economic opportunity op-portunity in the Four Corners, Cor-ners, Mr. Hoffman said. Members of the Grand County Economic Development Develop-ment Committee, along with Mr. Hoffman, met last Saturday Sat-urday in Steamboat Springs, Colo., with the Aviation Committee of Colorado's Club 20. Members of that organization will be asked to involve in the four-state organization. The coming meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in the Commissioners' Room of the Montezuma County Courthouse in Oprtez. Marshall Mar-shall Denton of that city is assisting in arrangements. |
