Show Drug & Alcohol Council Active Here After Three Years of Operation The Grand County Drug and Alcohol Advisory Council was established in the Fall of 1972 to coordinate and assist exisiting area agencies and organizations dealing with drug and alcohol abuse problems. prob-lems. Seven original members were selected by the County Commission to serve on the council. They were Dixie Barker, Fr. Sandy Hampton, Bruce Cawton, Rodney Phillips, Phill-ips, Leland Teeples and Duane Wimmer. Bill Benge was elected to serve as chairman and Bill Bacon, Ed Gough, Kelly Halls and Dr. C. A. Raymond were selected to serve as alternates. Over the past 3 years, the council has expanded to be more broadly representative of the Moab community. The current council includes representatives repre-sentatives of youth, agencies, organizations, churches, elected elec-ted officials, parents and other interested citizens. Current members are Dixie Barker, Rodney Phillips, Joe Eaton, Kaye Stoye, Julie Markle, Richard Bagley, Gill Groff, Max Molgard, Keith Peterson, Richard Shanteau, Kyle Bailey, Bai-ley, Mike Crist, Tom Anderson, Ander-son, Charles Nelson, Charles Pipkin, Don Robinson, Janis Bonser, secretary, and Fr. Sandy Hampton, chairman. The council has worked to promote drug and alcohol education and prevention in the schools and community by sponsoring performances of the Kenwood Players, and in cooperation with the Community Commun-ity Theatre, the play "Lady on the Rocks." Council members have applied for and received grants enabling 18 persons from the area to receive education and training a"t the U.S. Ofiice of Education Drug Training Center in San Antonio, Anton-io, Texas. In addition, each year the council provides scholarships to the University of Utah's School on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies. Although the State of Utah provides the funding for the staff and program of the Alcohol Information Center, the council is responsible for its development and supervision. super-vision. The council promotes and coordinates treatment and rehabilitation resources in the area, and has expnaded a volunteer program at Allen Memorial Hospital for patients who need detoxification.
