From left are: Slim Mabery, Deputy District Governor; Bob Pattison, President; Duane Bolton, Past President; and Jim Gardner, Treasurer. Moab Lions attended Winter conference Four members of the Moab Lions Club attended the Utah Lions Mid-Winter Conference in Salt Lake City over the weekend. One of the highlights high-lights of the conference, the group reported, was the Lions newly purchased Clinical Testing Van (T-I, Dec. 22, 1977) which was on display. A slogan of the Utah State Lions is: "Seeing is Believing!" (Indicating (In-dicating the belief instilled in those whose eyesights have been saved or restored). And, to quote the four Lions who attended the conference, "When we actually saw this mobile testing unit on display we really believed in our efforts to help bring it about. And when this testing unit comes to Moab we are sure those who have supported their Lions projects will really be able to see where their contributions have gone." This mobile eye screening unit cost $32,270.50 plus about $4,300 for operational costs for a year. On Nov. 12 a down payment of $4,716.50 was made through the Utah Lions Charities Foundation. Within one month this amount had been donated by individual Lions throughout the state. By the time of the Mid-Winter Conference, Jan. 14, an additional addi-tional $5,085.11 had been contributed. con-tributed. Another $1,750 was contributed by Lions and wives wiv-es attending the conference, leaving an unpaid balance of $20,718.89. A goal is to be able to pay off this balance and have a burning of the contract during the State Convention at St. George in May. In speaking of this unit. Slim Mabery said: "I remember remem-ber how skeptical some of the Lions were when the Van project was presented during the State Convention in Logan Log-an last June. But, again "Seeing if Believing" and now that it is a reality, it is a joy to share in the pride and enthusiasm enthusi-asm that is so prevelent among the Lions." "There are 134 Lions Clubs in Utah," Mabery said. "This means that each club can have the use of the unit for two days each year. During this period our glaucoma and other oth-er clinics can be made available avail-able to the entire community as well as to other communities communi-ties such as Green River, Thompson, Cisco, etc., that have no Lions Clubs. And these services will be free to everyone, the young and the old and to the rich and poor, alike," he said. The Moab Lions recently contributed $394.11 to the Clinical Van Fund ($300 profit from their circus in October and $94.11 from the convention in September). "This has cost the individual Lions nothing more than a little interest in our fund raising projects," Mabery said. "However, a good many Lions as well as Non-Lions have expressed a desire to contribute," he added. Continuing, Contin-uing, "It is a policy of Lions Clubs not to solicit or accept contributions from non-Lions without giving something of value in return. But, when this screening unit comes to Moab I am sure this will be something of value to contributors contrib-utors whether those particular particu-lar individuals, or business, actually make use of it or not." Each contributor of $10.00 or more will receive a certificate certifi-cate and lapel pin in appreciation. appreci-ation. Lions wishing to contribute con-tribute should contact Slim Mabery by telephone or bring their contributions to the Lions meeting at the Green-well Green-well Restaurant at 7:00 p.m. Monday evening. Non-Lions, and those wishing to contribute contrib-ute in the names of their companies, may contact Lion Slim at 259-6766 or the club treasurer, Jim Gardner, at the State Farm Insurance Office at 136 East Center in Moab. |
