Show Conservation Was Theme For Literary Club Meet The Woman's Literary Club met Saturday, 2 p.m. at Balsley Hall for a lesson on conservation under the dir- ection of Jean Heteniah and her committee members, Miriam Mir-iam Pearson and Marlyn Rose. Light salad type refreshments refresh-ments with punch and coffee were served, and the decorations decora-tions were collector rocks and creepy crawling creatures. President Joan Shermer presided pre-sided and Mrs Heteniah was program chairman. Mrs. Heteniah presented Oswaldo Gomez, park ranger from the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands ' National Na-tional Park. He spoke on the Student Conservation Association Associa-tion and his affiliation with the Park Service. Of 286 national parks and 155 national forest, 46 are using this program. Canyonlands has the most students with 8 SCA"s. This program got underway around 1964 and Gomez credited unit manager Glen Alexander for the use of SCA's in this area. Two students, Monty Car of New York and Debbie Pauly of the Los Angeles area were introduced. Monty spoke on the college age students and Debbie on high school age. The students serve for 3 months, and receive free housing and $30 per week with a uniform allowance and transportation to their work area. The college group requires the SCA's to have at least one year of college and be 18 or over, and high school students must be 16. They leam maintenance, back country coun-try patrol, lecture programs, walks, first aid, rescue, trail upkeep and many other things. The Student Conservation Program is funded by federal grants of public contributions and each student needs $700. They are selected at random geographically and must submit sub-mit an application, school transcripts, 2 personal references refer-ences and have a physical exam. There is also a high school Wilderness Group and an alumni group. The alumni group works as student assist ants to high school programs and sherpas (they pack in supplies) to the back country. Several members of the club will attend the Eastern District Convention in Montjcello on April 23 and their next meeting will be Monday, May 2 at the Courthouse. |
