Show U-95 Dedication Set for Sept. 17 Utah Highway 95 the scenic scen-ic route connecting Blanding and Hanksville across the rugged Colorado River drainage, drain-age, will be officially dedicated on September 17, it was decided by a task force committee from four counties which met in Monticello last Wednesday evening. And Governor Calvin L. Rampton has designated the route as Utah's Bicentennial Highway, suggesting that the dedication take place during late September in conjunction conjunc-tion with National Highway Week. The last twenty-three mile segment of the highway which was yet unsurfaced, was completed by Corn Construction Construc-tion Company early this month, and opened to traffic. That section, from a point near Fry Canyon extending to the vicinity of Hite, was built at a total cost of some $6 million. Known as "The Backbone of Utah's Golden Circle of Parks," U-95 is one of the only routes in Utah connecting major areas of rural Utah without going through the populated Wasatch Front. It allows traffic from the Bryce-Zion Bryce-Zion area to continue directly eastward to the Canyonlands-Arches Canyonlands-Arches vicinity, and should become extremely popular with recreational travelers. James Black of Monticello was named chairman of the task force committee, which is planning events in Monticello; a motorcade across U-95 with dedication ceremonies at Natural Nat-ural Bridges and winding up with a watermelon bust at Hanksville. More details will be made available later. |
