Show Workshops to be Held On Canyonlands Park Objectives This Fall Public input into the development devel-opment of management objectives objec-tives for National Parks is now being asked for earlier than usual. Canyonlands National Park now coordinates workshops in designated cities to gather public ideas before they draft a master plan of objectives for management. At these workshops people sit down in small groups and discuss their ideas for the park. Some of these ideas might be; should jeep roads be eliminated or increased in the park, what amounts of river use is acceptable, what types and amounts of roads should be in the park, and what camping facilities are feasible. "The public gives their ideas to one another and talks about them instead of just voicing them at a public hearing," stated Dave May, interpretive specialist, at Canyonlands. Can-yonlands. The Park Service then gathers the input from the different workshops and writes them up and sends to everyone who attended the workshop. These people then send back any corrections or additions and the Park Service then puts together a plan for the Park. At this time public hearings are set up and the public again get to put input to the plan. From there a Master Plan is then decided on and the process of action begins. The Park Service had this workshop foremat in February concerning Natural Bridges and found it an effective way to gather input. The workshops for Canyonlands Canyon-lands will be scheduled for late August or early September. |
