Show Seminar Should Improve Utah Roads, Highway Engineer Savs The roads you trave: will be better in the future predicts Blaine J. Kay, Stiate Highway Engineer, because of a seminar cur. rently being conducted under un-der the joint sponsorship of the State Highway Department De-partment and the Utah Consulting Engineers Council Co-uncil at the State Road, Preconstruction Division, 757 West 2nd South in Salt Lake City. First time ever conducted, conduct-ed, the seminar is plan, ned to improve the Federal Fed-eral Aid Secondary Roads system by having consulting consult-ing engineers learn at first hand what can be done in designing a road to make it hold up longer, plus providing a stronger surface. sur-face. Twenty-three consulting con-sulting engineers are participating par-ticipating in the seminar, which has been organized into four areas by Mr. Kay's office and shop staff: Soils, Non-Destructive Testing, Bituminous Mixes and Asphalt. The engineers, representing represent-ing several consulting engineer en-gineer firms in Utah, will be better prepared to offer of-fer improved design services ser-vices plus expand their expertise in the field of highway design-to counties coun-ties in Utah, which sponsor spon-sor the Federal Aid system sys-tem under the administra g - I tion of the State Highway ! Department. The seminar is labled as a good example of "close cooperation between the state, counties and private pri-vate enterprise," by H. Eugene Nielsen, Chairman. Chair-man. Mr. Nielson is President Presi-dent of Nielsen & Maxwell, Max-well, Consulting Engineers, Engine-ers, and is a former president presi-dent of the Utah Chapter of Counseling Engineers Council (CEC). Mark Bry-ner, Bry-ner, a mechanical engineer engine-er consultant, is current Utah CEC president. The second phase of the seminar will run during the week of February 16 to 19 inclusive, with the engineers actively participating parti-cipating in laboratory studies stu-dies and experiments conducted con-ducted by several of Mr-Kay's Mr-Kay's assistants. On Tuesday Tues-day mornnig, Febraury 23, there will be an administrative adminis-trative session for the consulting con-sulting engineers at the State Office Building. |
