If you feel a need to express your feelings as to the type of big game hunt coming up please read the rest y of this article. The Division of Wildlife Resources is empowered to investigate and determine the facts relative to the big game resources of this state. Upon a determination of these facts, the Board of Big Game Control shall have full authority to establish hunting seasons for big game animals throughout the state and shall establish the policy of the division in all matters relating to the harvest of big game animals. Within the Department of Natural Resources a board of big game control is created. The board shall be comprised of the Director of the Division of Wildlife Resources, as chairman, . and four other members appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the Senate, for terms of four years each as follows: a member of the Utah Cattlemen's Association, a member of the Utah Wool-growers' Wool-growers' Association, a member mem-ber of the Utah Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Federation Federa-tion and a representative of the regional office of the U.S. Forest Service in Utah. Prior to the Board of Big Game Control decisions, Division Div-ision of Wildlife employees (statewide) collect data relevant rele-vant to herd trends. This data includes range studies (utilization (utiliza-tion of available food as well as amount of rtimespent on winter ranges), classification of harvest harvest trends, hunter pressure trend, preseason presea-son classification, post season classification, and various localized studies. This is biological data. Once this data is collected, it is compiled and the facts are presented to the Board of Big Game Control. Local conservation conserva-tion officers collect the majority major-ity of this data, and as a result local officers are requested to submit their recommendations as to dates and types of hunts. Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service employees also submit their recommendations, since they also help in the data collection. Local conservation officers (statewide) make recommendations recommen-dations to the Board of Big Game Control by analyzing biological data. Sometimes the public feels its needs are neglected in management decisions. Please fill out the Public Big Game Recommendation Form and send it in to me. I will then compile the forms and submit a summary in conjunction with (but separate from) my biological biolog-ical recommendation. gkc |
