Show f Community Comments If I were being asked to nominate the most nauseating news story of the year, It would be the announcement that some money-hungry book publishers and motion picture producers are said to be Interested In dramatizing the sordid story of killer Gary Gllmore with Gllmore featured as a sort of hero. In all of the attention being given to Gllmore's suicide attempt, his hunger strike, his jail-house betrothal and his past record as something of a prison escape artist, the reason why he was sentenced to death seems to have been forgotten. It Is time that we remembered. If our sob-sisters are determined to weep tears, why don't they weep for the two widows and three orphaned children left In the wake of Gllmore's killing spree. Any book or movie memorializing this man would be an Insult to American Intelligence. Jt And now, something new from the BLM: State Director Paul Howard's office in Salt Lake City is asking for public comment concerning new regulations now being formulated for the filming of commercial motion pictures on land administered by the BLM In Utah. I hope that Utah's Industrial promotion officials are on their toes along with communities, counties, and chambers of commerce all over the state which have worked so hard the past thirty years to develop an outdoor location movie Industry In Utah. Those interested in providing Input before this new rule is written, can do so by writing the Director, Bureau of Land Management, Washington, D.C. 20240. -sjt- We must applaud this week the actions of City Councilman Harold Jacobs, in moving the Moab City dump issue off dead center. Councilman Jacob's report to the Moab City Council Tuesday night gave every indication that solutions to the supposedly-banned open burning at the dump are not far away, and that he is seeking cooperation from other agencies In hastening the move. This column has been critical of the dump actions for the past year. One reaction to such criticism might well have been a continued determination to do nothing. Such was not the case with Councilman Jacobs. His current course of action will be appreciated by a good many Moabites wanting something better than what we have even If It costs some money. -,-sjt I'm afraid the days of non-attended budget hearings in Moab are over. The County's hearing Monday night was better than a three-ring circus. That's great. Even though feathers might get ruffled and voices loud, a lot of air gets cleared. And local officials know without a doubt what the people want from them in the way of spending tax dollars. sjt Congratulations to Ron Auger and his new officers, who will be taking over the reins at the Moab Chamber of Commerce office come the first of the year. Ron has proven to be a valuable community asset in his many involvements since his arrival here a few years ago. I'm sure he'll do a great Job running the C of C. |
