Show Political Candidates Talk To Moab Women's Group Candidates for local political polit-ical office were featured guests Monday at the monthly month-ly meeting of the Moab Business Bus-iness and Professional Women's Wom-en's Club. Club members reported re-ported their appreciation fcr the remarks made by the candidates who spoke at the meeting, held in the Desert Inn. Elizabeth Pipkin introduced introduc-ed the various candidates, and each gave his reasons for wishing to serve in the offices sought. Ralph J. Miller, Mil-ler, Sr., incumbent four year County Commissioner, gave a review of the projects undertaken un-dertaken and accomplished during the past few years, and the need for complete cooperation of all' members of the Commission, regardless regard-less of party affiliation. . Bert Swink,' Mr. Miller's Democratic opponent for the four year term now chairman chair-man of the County Planning Commission emphasized the need for Moab and Grand County as a whole to endeavor to become a hub instead of a "spoke" in the business of tourism. The third speaker was incumbent Republican two year Commissioner. He explained ex-plained the constitutional amendment am-endment proposals which will appear on the November ballot and their effect upon citizens of Moab and Grand county. A healthy discussion of the wording of these amendments am-endments followed Mr. Pope's (remarks; and it was the opinion of the group that each voter should read very care-.fully, care-.fully, each amendment before be-fore saying yes or no. This (Would be especially important impor-tant with regard to the proposal pro-posal to repeal the inventory inven-tory tax. There was a remarked re-marked difference of opinion opin-ion among candidates regarding re-garding the effect this issue would have on our area. Van Welch, Democrat opposing op-posing Mr. Pope, stated that he in contrast to his opponent op-ponent is a relative newcomer new-comer in Moab. He is an employee of Texas Gulf Sulphur, Sul-phur, and in addition owns a local business. Moab is his "chosen home." rather than an inherited one, he said. His main goal was to uphold all the good being done and make an honest effort to expand ex-pand the interests and welfare wel-fare of Grand county. His experience earned from living liv-ing in other cities could be well put to use here, he said. The fifth and final speak er of the evening was Sheldon Shel-don All red, member of the State School Board running for reelection on a non-partisan ticket. Mr. Allred explained ex-plained the duties of this Board and his reasons for wishing to remain on it. He answered a number of pertinent per-tinent questions posed by the club members and other candidates. can-didates.
