Show Approach Light System Dedicated at Airport The dedication of new e-lectronic e-lectronic instruments to be installed at the Canyonlands Airport took place Monday and was reported on in the weekly Chamber of Commerce Commer-ce meeting. Ground was broken for the installation of two lights which will be placed .approximately .approx-imately 600 feet from each end of the runway. The lights are equipped with three different colored beams, red, yellow and green. When a pilot is approaching ap-proaching the runway he will see one of the beams. If he. sees the yellow one it will indicate that he is too high for landing properly. If he sees the red one, he is too low. The green light signals the proper landing angle. There was good representation represen-tation from Salt Lake City with State Aeronautics Di- v rector R. V. Walker making mak-ing the presentation. On other matters in the Chamber of Commerce a-genda, a-genda, Harold Gaither . informed in-formed the members of an announcement received from the State Highway Department. Depart-ment. A new state map put out by the Department is now available in two different differ-ent sizes and in new colors. The map is suitable for government gov-ernment and business ofLf es. The 18 by 22 inch size will be available for $1; the 42 by 48 inch size will cost $3. Anyone needing a copy of the map may place their order with the County Clerk. The fencing project north of Moab was discussed by Chamber members and Harold Har-old Jacobs reported that e Grand County Safety Council Coun-cil is considering making the work a contest between 16 teams. The teams of men would challenge each other by seeing who could put up the fastest mile of fencing. It was suggested that those businesses, merchants or individuals in-dividuals interested in the project might be willing to sponsor a $10 entry fee for participating teams. The entry en-try fees would make up first, second and third prizes to be awarded to the organization or team putting up the fastest section of fence, with first place having something like a $100 prize, according to Mr. Jacobs. 16 miles of fencing is all that will be done this fall but it will be a $25,000 project by the time it is finished. Curtis Young suggested that the teams fence only the east side of the road- keeping all 16 miles of fencing on the east because that's the direction the cattle roam from. The materials ma-terials for the fence were due to arrive this week. Marion Ottinger moved that the Chamber of Commerce commend the Jaycees for their planting of the permanent perman-ent Christmas tree at the Courthouse. "It took considerable consid-erable work to get the tree and then to get it planted, but it's a beauty," said Mrs. Ottinger. "Time will tell if the effort is successful depending depend-ing on the success of having the tree remain alive in its new location." The Chamber members were unanimous in extending their commendations commenda-tions to the Jaycees for the work they did. The Book Cliffs road is o-pen o-pen to rough jeeping, "extremely "ex-tremely rough" said Fred Sfoye who last weekend got through to the good fishing in Weaver Reservoir. Stoye ac- companied George Dutos of Thompson through Sego Canyon Can-yon which was washed very badly during the storm two weeks ago. It v.-1 """essary to dynamite some sej. ' , " I to fill in great gaps in tlu road. Stoye advises not jeeping jeep-ing the road alone even though it is temporarily open for those that take to rough going. Several times their rigs got stuck and had to be pulled pull-ed out of soft areas by the o-ther o-ther rig. |
