Show Junior High T-BIrds inrl Undefeated Season Willi Win Over Monticello ' Mo.-ib's Junior High T-Bii'ds T-Bii'ds finished their season sea-son last Thursday with a .3S-7 victory over Monti-: Monti-: cello and closed the doors to another gridiron schedule sched-ule that saw them go unbeaten un-beaten and untied through six games. The . T-Birds had the (horses both offensively and defensively this year as they battered opponents oppon-ents by totaling 173 points for a 28.8 average per game. The T-Eird defense giavc up only 14 pointsi during the entire season and that averages out to 2.3 points per game. Of course, it's kind cf hard to score 2.3 points : in a game, but then again some of the T-Bird opponents oppon-ents would have been hap- py to collect that many as ; four of the six opponents were shut oat by the Moab gridders. In fact, the defensive performers on the T-Bird squad insist they still have not been scored upon. And the defense does have facts to 'back r;p that state ment as both touchdowns touch-downs again:t Moab were scored while the offensive machine was still on the field, according to head coach Del Ford. Cortez in the opener, and Monticello, in the season sea-son finale, were the only teams to score against the T-Birds and the Cortez TD resulted in a blocked 'punt, while the Monticello TD was on a kickoff return. re-turn. So, there is a friendly initer-squad discussion going go-ing on between the T-Birds T-Birds on who should be charged with the 14 points but the discussion is full of team spirit the kind of spirit that carried them through the season. And the spirit and skill of the T-Birds carried them to an overwhelming ivictory over Monticello .last Thursday as Moab jumped off to a 25-0 lead ,at halftime and coasted the rest of the way . as Coach Ford cleared his ibenoh in the season, finale. fin-ale. HalCback Davis Bier-rcheid Bier-rcheid opened the Moab scoring early in the first period when he hauled in a 15 yard pass from quarterback quar-terback Greg Jacobson. The point after try was no good and Moab led 6-0. Halfback Robin Groff, the T-Birds' top scorer, picked up the second Moab Mo-ab score'of the quarter as he scampered around end for 40 yards. The try for the point after was again ' in vain. Moab tallied twice in the second period as Jacobson Jac-obson connected with Ron Hirschfeld for the first one on a 35 yard scoring toss. Jacobson then ihit Bier-scheid Bier-scheid with a quick pass to give Moab a commanding command-ing 19-0 advantage. Jacobson connected with er.d Gail Gordon a few tnrnutes later for his third TD pass of the half with a 20 yard aerial to give the T-Birds their 25-0 half-time half-time lead. Moab added their fifth tally in the opening minutes min-utes of the final period when Jacohson, passing for his fourth TD of the day, hit end Larry Price for a 20 yard scoring play. He then threw to Bier-scheid Bier-scheid for the PAT and Moab widened their margin mar-gin to 32-0. The final T-Bird TD came on a pass interception intercep-tion by Marty Holland who picked the ball off at the1 40 yard line and ran all the way untouched. ; Monticello picked up its only touchdown with only minutes remaining in the ball game when QB Richard Rich-ard Smith took a Moab kickoff on his own 40 yard line, bobbled the ball twice, and then ran 60 yards for the score. It was the second TD of the season sea-son against the Birds. |
