B ROWLAND LEWIS In tIlls this 1920 Thanksgiving period we would have ample reason for a. a a spirit j I of real thankfulness if it we were conscious conscious con con- of nothing more than that con I asa as asa asa a nation and as a state we have plenty plenty plenty plen plen- ty wo we have peace and we have health I I Our heartfelt thankfulness for these j I things is not to be gainsaid But there 1 are other things in our national life Ilfe of I more far reaching consequences that should serve to make us even more I thankful This Thanksgiving time is I th the three hundredth anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrim fathers on I American soil These doughty fathers brought to ur shores and gave to us as an inheritance the very Sax Anglo i ion on ideals and institutions that are a i most priceless possession to Americans everywhere IDEALS OF NATION The Pilgrim fathers founded in this I I nat nation on the three great fundamentals upon which all our free institutions I have been built They gave to us the deep and abiding sense of fair play among all men the ennobling sense of the common good and the exemplification tion lion of absolute obedience to law once that law was set up by the will of the majority i I More than this they established for forthe forus forus us the deep and abiding love for the soil for the home for the church for forthe forthe forthe the state and for the school The very civilization that we so firmly be believe believe be- be lieve in those very liberties that weso weso we wo so thoroughly enjoy today the very hopes and aspirations that motivate us to higher and nobler endeavor are area a priceless inheritance to us direct from the Pilgrim fathers And for forI these things we are devoutly thankful I THANKFULNESS I I I I We are thankful too for the sturdy manhood and the noble integrity that I the Pilgrim fathers bequeathed to modern modern mod mod- ern America Every person in the land today thrills at the noble example of righteousness and Just living of that heroic band of men We point with pride and doubly so that they are our forefathers Not one one of us dares sully the priceless inheritance that they ha have ve handed on to us And in our thankfulness we must not forget the J pilgrim mothers They too tea played their part History often speaks of the Pilgrim fathers but it itis itis itis is all too seldom that one finds any reference to the Pilgrim mothers How they must have suffered during that terrible winter in that strange and savage land how they silently in their own hearts must have longed for home They were ill clad and ill equipped against the rigors of so severe a climate climate climate cli cli- mate and their spirits often must have been cut to the quick Yet with courage courage courage cour cour- age and patience to endure to the utI uttermost uttermost ut ut- ut- ut they like the noble and God God- fearing women that they were by their heroic conduct contributed a legacy to the young women of America equally as significant as the contribution of the Pilgrim fathers to the young men of America They established the faith devotion and courage of true truo motherhood on American soil soli And to today today today to- to day we rejoice and are exceedingly glad for their noble contribution to our modern womanhood Thank God for the Pilgrim mother |
