Show I I 1 I Tourists Hurry to Homes in All Parts of United States I II I nail Railroad road traffic in and out of Salt Lake Is showing a heavy increase and feverish activity is evident In shipping circles in anticipation of the general strike on all railroads of the country called foh fob September 4 Tourists In all parts of the country are hurrying to their homes In the East and the West Vest While the traffic into Yellowstone park has practically ended for this season the transportation transportation 1 tion companies are aie doing their utmost to hurry those now In the park to their homes by various routes All steam roads entering Salt Lake have announced embargoes on freight that cannot reach its destination by Sunday and in some cases as early as Saturday Embargoes on live JIve stock explosives and perishable goods of all kinds including fruit are already ef effective effective ef- ef and in the case of other freight shipments are accepted at the owners owner's risk After Monday freight will be accepted accept accept- ed subject to indefinite delay Some of the railroads have notified agents to inform all passengers that they will be furnished transportation only when they can normally reach their homes before Monday Otherwise they assume the responsibility for Indefinite delay While it is generally rumored that the railroads are making plans for me oper operation of passenger trains after the strike goes Into effect no announcement announcement announcement announce announce- ment has been made officially It is said however that the Oregon Short Line and the Denver Rio Grande will follow the plans of Eastern railroads railroads rail ran roads in handling at least one train daily While there Is no precedent to follow follow fol tol- fol- fol low it is reliably reported that Western Western Western West West- ern railroads are to adopt the plan of placing mail cars on every train This makes any person who interferes with the regular operation of the train amenable to the federal laws This would only relate to the handling handling han han- dUng of regular passenger traffic it is reported From the standpoint of the local food tood supply there is little to fear at atthe atthe atthe the present all alI railroad officials de de- clare Salt Lake City obtains its milk supply from the districts within a radius of a few tew miles mlles and that milk which cannot be handled on the electric electric electrio elec elec- trio roads can be hauled to the city elty on automobile trucks There Is enough meat and other foodstuff stored in the city to last the city for many months t In a word Salt Lake City Is in a position to be virtually self supporting if necessary While It is true that much of the present consumption of foodstuffs especially in canned goods comes from other parts of the country commission merchants and grocery men say bay there is no reason to fear a food famine here The greatest hardship to be worked on the people of Utah in the event of ofa a long strike would be the lack of em em- Aside from the railroad men who would be thrown be-thrown thrown out of work thousands of mining and smelter men would bo ho without employment The mills and mines would be forced to shut down because of the lack of transportation facilities Were Vere the strike to last Into the winter there would be a great coal shortage There is no coal mined within with with- in the radius of Salt Sait Lake electric lines and all the coal consumed here is shipped from the Wyoming Colorado Colorado Colorado Colo Colo- rado and southern Utah fields These coal beds are located on lines that would be affected by the strike and beyond all question of doubt dealers say the price of coal would advance in leaps and bounds At the present however there is enough coal stored in Salt Lake to supply the demands of the city It is pointed out that the railroads ads now running Into Salt Lake are carrying a It heavy supply of coal and this this' would this would be available if it it became necessary All hotels In Yellowstone National park closed their doors at noon today as a result of the forthcoming railroad railroad railroad rail rail- road strike and the or more tourIsts tourists tourists tour tour- in the park are hastening away by the various gateways In order to reach their homes before the wheels are |
