Show The Story FOR TONIGHT I OLD WOLFS WOLF'S FRIGHT It had been a long cold wInter In the woods and Old Hungry Wolf Volt had come comedown down from the high hill beyond the woods tot Lot food Mr Fox had heard him several times at his door that wInter but li he had pulled the bedclothes over hIs head and kept so still that Old Hungry Wolf thought he was not at home He had knocked at Jack Rabbits Rabbit's door too but the cupboard was bare hen he saw that he went on t to Willy 1 Squirrels Squirrel's house and knocked there No one answered so Old Hungry Wolf peeked In the window and saw the cold ashes on the hearth In front ot of the fireplace and a pile ot of shells nearby which told him there ther-e was no rood food to be had there either I At Mr Bears Bear's house there were crumbs all over the floor noor from the pantry to the outside door and Old Wolf Hungry Voll knew someone had been there before him The animals were beginning to be afraid ot of Old Hungry Wolf Volf and one morning after he had been the rounds of the woods folks Mr Fox called them all together and sald- sald something must be done Jt If we could scare him he would never come again he said Why couldn't we get the old scarecrow scarecrow scare scare- crow out ot of Mr Mans Man's garden said Jack Rabbit I do not think Old hungry Hun Hun- gry ry Wolf ever saw It So when It began to grow dark over overto to Mr II Mans Man's garden went Mr Fox and Jack Rabbit and Willy Squirrel and r they took the scarecrow to the woods with them They put It near the edge ot of the I woods where Old Hungry Wolf Volt always came In from the hills and then they I hid behind a big rock where the bushes still stood and waited After a while they all grew sleepy and before beCore the they knew it they were all fast tast asleep Jark Jalk e first It was almOst almost al- al mOst daylight and he peeped out from behind the rock What lie he saw scared him so he tell fell over backward and awoke Willy Squirrel Up jumped Willy Villy and looked out from his hiding place and back lie he jumped right on Mr Fox who awoke with a start and started to run run but he only onh got as tar far as one side of the rock when saw he-saw a big white man standing right at the edge ot of the woods waving his arms and kicking his legs in the most threatening manner Mr Fox ran behind the rock Did Didou you ou see him asked Willy Squirrel his ears standing up with fright Willy Squirrel was so frightened his little bOdy shook so his teeth werE chattering what wha ls is It he gasped Just then the mOOn came out bright and shone full tun on the white man and Mr 11 Fox laughed It is only the scarecrow scarecrow scare scare- crow lie he said it has been snowing arid and the coat and trousers are covered with snow Then Mr Fox stopped speaking and looked very serious Old Hungry Wolf may have seen It and been scared away we must look for tor his tracks In the snow lie he said Sure enough there were his tracks s. s but he had not come close to the woods he h had d seen the white scary looking man as he came caine across the field and had run awa away Never again did the woods folk see Old Hungry Wolf When Mr Bear a woke awoke in the spring they told him what had happened while he slept It If Old Wolf Volf had been anywhere within miles of the woods lie he must have heard Mr Bear laugh Copyright 1910 loy by the McClure Newspaper Newspaper News News- paper Syndi ate New York City |
