Show SHEETS' LAST WORD; STILL INSISTS ON A LOCAL DEBATE Another Letter Passes Between Be-tween Managers in Liquor Campaign. With a view, he says, to having Manager G. M. McDowell of the Man ' ufarturen and Business Men' association asso-ciation either accept or reject the proposition prop-osition of a public debate between representatives rep-resentatives o,f the "dr.vs" and the" "wets" on the liquor question. Manager Man-ager Edwin 8. Sheet, of the Halt Lake Anti-Liquor league sent the following letter to O. M. McDowell, manager ot the Manufacturers and Business Men's association, this afternoon: "Dear Sir: Replying to your communication com-munication of the 15th inst. relative to a joint diseu.sion of the question of prohibition: "It is not our desire to enter into any war of words, nor any argumentative argumenta-tive discussion through correspondence. correspond-ence. We are willing, at sneh time and place and under such conditions as to detail of arrangements as can be left to a committee, to discuss the issue which is before the people of this eity with anv reputable resident j insist that the question heretofore proposed pro-posed is the only subject of interest to the people of this eity, to wit, 'Resolved, 'Re-solved, That the citizens of Salt Lake City sohuld, for the public good, vote against the sale of liquor on the 27th inst. ' "Unless you are willing to .meet these conditions promptly, the correspondence corre-spondence upon this question will be considered closed, so far as we are concerned. con-cerned. Yours trnly, "EDWIN 8. SHEETS, "Manager Salt Lake ' Anti-Liquor League." The "drvs" issued the first invitation invi-tation to the "wets" to debate the liquor question locally, some time ago. Manager McDowell refused to consider the first proposition at all, but later expressed a willingness to furnish a speaker to defend the "wet" side of a debate as soon as he eoold get a list of speakers signed up. Sheets wanted it to be a local man and Me-Dowell Me-Dowell intimated it as his opinion that Sheets is "bluffing.' Sheets has replied re-plied for the last time on paper, he says. In the meantime no arrangements for the joint debate have been formulated. |
