Show THE FLEET REVIEW. The review of the fleet a Portsmouth harbor on Saturday waa finer than the two great reviews in London on Thursday and Friday. Those splendid splen-did ships, miles of them, all roaring welcomes to the new king and queen, were a new reminder that "Britannia rules the waves," and that the throne ia safe and the nation ia aafe ao long aa those steel forts remain afloat. . Three hundred and twenty-three yeara ago, up by that same harbor of Portsmouth, the greatest fleet that up to that time had ever been assembled sailed, intent upon the subjugation of England. But Howard and Drake and Hawkins, with a much smaller fleet, dispersed the great armada; then the storms became Kngland'a ally and completed the defeat. Only a remnant got back, but thirty-five ships and 13,000 lives had been- lost i Well, one of those ships that the king and queen' reviewed Saturday could easily sink such another fleet as was that great armada. When that old time fleet waa sighted in the ehannel old Admiral Drake waa playing some out of -door game, and when the people in fear called attention tc the approaching enemy he said: "Oh, let 'a finish the game; well lick them anyway." That spirit still ia potential on the modern fleet. |
