Show FREE IMPORTS. The cenius bulletins report that importa free of duty during the fiscal year of 1911 hava aggregated aggre-gated $778,000,000 and that non-dutiable importa have increased from 1366,000,000 in 1891. That would be an increase of 442.000,000 in twenty years. To make that more exact at least 40 per cent should be added because of the advance in prices, fhat ia if the aame goods that were imported im-ported in 1891 wera imported thia year they would have aggregated $470,000,000 instead of $366,000r 000. The increased importa then on tha fre list In twenty years amounted to not $470,000,000, but approximately ap-proximately $320,000,000; which ia about fair aa showing tha increased consumption of tha people. Among the articles admitted free of duty during tha past year are India rubber, coffee, bidea and skins, which are all right, but others admitted free should be taxed, such as raw silk, copper- ores and matte, which should be faxed because much of tha silk comes from the orient, and our own country can see to providing -the 'needed copper. - It all shews that thia ia a rett big aountry. . |
