Show THE HORSE. The contest going on between the horse and the motor is an interesting one. The horse has rather gained of late. Five years ago it was confidently predicted that in five years the work being done by cab horses In London would be done by half fts many motor as (here then were horses. Many thousands thou-sands of horses have been superseded by motors, but for four year past, as many motors have had to be put on as there have been horses taken off. At the aame time there haa beeu a great increase of polo ponies and riding ant! driving light. horses, while the demand haa steadily increased for heavy draught horses. ' The long-distance pure blood racer ia the only one which has deemed to suffer in this country, and that has come through the elimination elimi-nation of tha race track. At the aame time the thoroughbred has been more carefully looked after in foreign countries, the people abroad understanding understand-ing that the thoroughbred ia the only perfect type of horse... The horse shows so far held this year indicate more than usual interett in the welfare of the horse. This is especially true of the part taken by army men In acquiring more perfect animals. The day of the horse is not yet over ; the only lesson thus far taught haa been to raise better and better horses. . . " ' |
