Show THE MEASURE OF PATRIOTISM. In the North American Review for April 5 there is an article on "Patriotism and Holiday Observances" Observ-ances" from no less pen than that of Grover Cleveland, Cleve-land, formerly President of the United States. It is a good article. It really is the address delivered by Mr. Cleveland at the Union League club at Chicago on Washington's birthday of this year. We take it that it is an indication that Mr. Cleveland Cleve-land is softening a little in his old age, because, if we remember correctly, in his earlier years he was not given to taking much note of sacred national holidays. We have rather a lively recollection that wTien he was President he found that the retreat of Hogg island, where it is said there is good fishing, was more congenial to him than to attend a Memorial Me-morial service at Arlington or out at the Soldiers home. We are glad that he has had a change of heart, because certain it is that it did not appeal very kindly in hfs younger days to those who went out to fight for the Union, and the deeds of the noblest of them Jid not especially impress him.
