Show DRAMATIC CONFESSION OF INCENDIARISM IS MADE DY SDFFRAOETTE Mr. Edith Rigby, Wife of English Physician, Declares De-clares That in Burning Lever Mansion She "Lighted a Beacon for King and Country to See Women Suffering an Insupportable Grievance"; Griev-ance"; Admits She Also Placed Bomb in Liverpool Liver-pool Cotton Exchange. LIVERPOOL, July 10. A dramatic confession of incendiarism was made today by a well known militant suffragette, Mrs. Edith Rig-by, wife of a physician at Preston, to the magistrate sitting in the police court here. She was remanded for further hearing. Mrs. Rigby declared it was she who last Tuesday burned down the country residence at Rivington, near Horwich, Lancashire, of Sir William H. Lever, causing damage estimated at $100,000. She further confessed to being the perpetrator of the outrage at the Liverpool cotton exchange on July 5, when a bomb exploded, but caused little damage. Mrs. Riffby surrendered voluntarily to the police. When arraigned today she gloried in her achievements, saying she wanted Sir William H. Lever to consider con-sider whether his house was mora valuable valu-able aa a show place than as a bear on lighted for the king and the country to see women suffering an insupportable insupport-able grievance. She told the magistrate: magis-trate: "I lighted that beacon. I also placed the explosives in the Liverpool exchange ex-change to show how easy it is to procure pro-cure them and to place them ia public buildings. I might just as easily have blown up the Nelson monument. Why Cotton Exchange Chosen. "I chose the Liverpool cotton exchange ex-change because the cotton induatry has been built up largely by woman's labor. The merchants are willing to get power and wealth out of the labor of women, while the women themselves are denied the vote and citixenship. This is the first knock at the door, t'n der the 'eat and mouse act' one of the greatest women in the land ie going to be done to death. If the government is going to kill that woman this ia a warning. " Mrs. Higby has been a member of the Woman 's Social and Political union, the militant suffragette organization, for many years and has taken a great part in public movements to promote the welfare of women. She has been imprisoned five times in connection with the suffragette movement and was on several occasions released owing to the breakdown of her health after "hunger strikes." |
