Show LEGION VETERANS WANT TO KEEP CIGARETTES Send Protest From Tooele to Governor and Members Mem-bers of Legislature When the Southwick antleigarette bill came before the house from the senate there was a spirited arbument over its reference by the sepaker to the committee on manufactures and commerce. Kepresentativet McShane gave notice that if it was not reported out of .committee within a week he would call it up. The week was up today and it is now said that the bill will be reported out of commit toe on. Monday afternoon. Among the petitions which were read yesterday pent est mg against the passage of the Southwirk bill hy the house was the following resolution from the (ieorge A. (Jreenlee post No. 17 of the American legion at Tooele, a copy of which was also sent to Ciover- ; nor Charles H. Mabey: Whereas, the great principles upon which the American government was founded recognizes the freedom of the individual to preserve his even tenor through life governed only by the dictates dic-tates of his own conscience and by certain cer-tain restrictions Imposed by society in cenrr;i to Kccure for others the same rrr eT. .nTTa n t : Whereas, there Is now before the house of representatives of the state of t'fah a bill known as senate bill No. 12, having for its object the elimination of the sale and restrictions in the use of cigarettes within the borders of this state, and Whereas, It Is debatable whether the use of cicarette is harmful to the grown individual, and Whereas, the smoking of cigarettes by one Individual infringes In no way whatever upon the rights of any other Individual or society in general, and Whereas, the great body of American sol ii era in the late war were freely supplied with cigarettes when they were risking their lives for the great principles which arc mentioned above, and Whereas, the Identical people who accepted the sacrifices made by these men are now the very oitf-it wno seek to deny t hem their .sacred rights of personal liberty, and Whereas, there is a law now on the statute books of the state of Utah prohibiting pro-hibiting the sale of tobacco to minors which is not or never has been enforced, en-forced, except In Provo. and Whereas, the enactment of such a m ejj s u re wou Id by no m ean s accom -plish its object, but merely make lam-hreakers lam-hreakers of a great number of its best citizens; therefore, be it Hesolved, that we, the members of tleorge A. Greenlee post No. 17 of the American legion of Tooele I'tah. assembled as-sembled at regular meeting, do hereby condemn most fervently this proposed law and beg that this bill be not enacted; en-acted; and be it further Kesolved, that one copy of these resolutions be sent to the speaker of the house of representatives, one tp the Honorable Governor Charles K. Mabey and one spread on the minutes of this meeting. |
