Show TANKER BLAST ' LAID TOFUMES BAYONNE. N. J, Nov. 20. (INS) Accumulated gas fumes and not saboteurs today was believed responsible re-sponsible for the blast that shattered shat-tered a Standard Oil tanker at her Bayonne, N. J., pier, causing damage estimated at 200,000. The explosion ripped a gaping hole in the deck of the tanker amidships and shook the immediate immedi-ate area as if an earthquake had struck. The vessel, the J. A. Mowlnckel. flying the flag of Panama, brought 8.250,000 gallons of oil from Vene-auela Vene-auela five days ago bat had been drained of her cargo when the blast occurred. Standard Oil officials pointed out that no one would attempt to blow up an empty ship and said that all investigators inclined to the opinion that the explosion had been an accident caused by the gathering of gas fumes in the No. 9 tank of the vessel. Two Men Perish in Fire In Hotel at Terre Haute TERRE HAUTE, Ind., Nov. 20 Wi Two men were killed early today when fire swept the three- story brick Saint Nicholas hotel a few blocks from downtown Terre Haute. The two, trapped on upper floors, were Warren Blair, 76-year-old retired railroad conductor, and J. W. Jewell, about .60, both of Terre Haute. |
