Jackling Warns Ths federal government must stop "political tinkering" and persecution perse-cution of business If the present business slump is to be remedied, D. C. Jackling, president of ths Utah Copper company, warned In Salt Lake City Thursday. Mr. Jackling, in Salt Lsks City to attend a banquet of veteran employes em-ployes of the copper company at the Hotel Utah at 8:30 p. m., Ism- basted ths government's attitude toward business at a press conference confer-ence during the afternoon, "A aound condition lies In a pub-lie pub-lie stats of mind and as long as thst psychology la repulsed by false pronouncements and misleading procedure, the situation will continue," con-tinue," hs said. "It Is ominous, of svsa worse things than we are now experiencing." Mr. Jackling explained that the Utah Copper company has sold less thsn 30 psr cent of Its copper production pro-duction in the last three months. The minimum sold was 10 per cent of the firm's production. The amount of unsold copper reserve re-serve held by the company is four times as great as it wss in August, hs asserted. Market Needed "It's just one of those things." he said. "You Just can't go on producing pro-ducing copper with no place to dispose dis-pose of It, regardless of price. "The msrkst is absolutely flat, closely approximating the worst condition that has prevailed In the last several years, as far as current demand la concerned. "Nobody knows what ths outcome will be. My personal opinion is that there la no natural economic excuse for ths distressed conditions In which business finds Itself. It Is perfectly obvious that there la a hesitant disposition on ths part of everyone, but this does not reflect the attitude of the manufacturer who would liks to run at full ea- pacity. Kemedy Is Simple' The remedy of ths condition Is a simple one," he said. "It rests solely In a recession of federal political tinkering with and persecution of business. Someone Is not going to liks that, and I hope they hear it" Mr. Jacking indicated that recent rumors hsd charged newspapers ss being in league with other interests inter-ests In a conspiracy to sngsnder fear and resultant hesitation on ths part of ths public to do business. "I certainly do not know of any Industry which would care to commit com-mit such hari-kari, even If It were possible, snd I don't believe the press of this country wants to pour cold water over Industry and crucify their own business as well as others." Freeing business of any blame for hesitancy in recovery, Mr. Jack-I Jack-I said ths condition reflects ths tude of the public, purchaser i. manufactured products of all kinds. Public Turns Back "It refuses to buy and, accordingly, accord-ingly, stocks of everything mount to proportions beyond the limits of tenable surpluses. "The last thing In ths world ths Utah Copper company wants to see Is a dropping off of demand for copper so mat slocks ars unsaiaoie and must be reduced. We have no curtailment program other than a watchful attitude as a matter of necessity in an effort to keep production pro-duction within the kmitation of our ability to dispose of It. We shall keep as much of the working force employed as possible." |
