Shechan 37 Years of Service Recognized in Appointment of Successor to Monsignor Hunt The Very Rev. Monsignor Michael F. Sheehan, noted for his Irish a it and solemn devotion to the Catholic church, Saturday was reaping reap-ing the fruit of 37 years' labor in his chosen field, having been appointed ap-pointed vicar general of the Salt Lake Catholic diocese. His appointment was announced Saturday by 'he man he succeeds, the Rt. Rev. Monsignor D. G Hunt, bishop-elect of the diocese, appointment effective immediately. A pioneer in the diocese. Monsignor Monsig-nor Sheehan since 1927 has been pastor of the Church of Our Divine Saviour. He was born near Cahir, Tipperary county. Ireland. In 1872. attending the national school, the Mount Mellary seminary snd All Hallows college In Dublin. After being ordained in Dublin, his first probation duty was in Salt Lake City, where he came in October. Octo-ber. 1900. beginning at St. Mary's cathedral. Monsignor Sheehan has served under all the bishops who have headed the dioceae. He was transferred to Austin, Nev., where for five years he wss psstor of St. Augustine's church, then to ths Sacred Heart church in Ely. where he wss psstor from 1807 to 1916. when he came to St. Patrick's parish in Salt Lake City. He was made a monsignor in 1910 by Pope Pius XI. snd waa invested with his robes of office on the return re-turn of the late Bishop Joseph S. ! Glass, who hsd been on a visit to the pope. Monsignor Sheehan himself received re-ceived the congratulations of the pope in 1025 when he celebrated his silver jubilee ss a priest. .being laud, ed for hia work in this diocese. He revisited his old home in Ireland Ire-land in 1926 and again in 1932. when he attended the eucharistic congress In Dublin. |
