Show Schools Board 1 Wails Test On Velo Power i Utah state board of education braced itself Saturday for a court test of the governor's veto power even though such action may Involve In-volve budgets of state institutions of higher education not directly under the board. Gov. J. Bracken Lee vetoed an Item of $20,000 for educational research re-search which the legislature had Included la. the state department of public Instruction appropriation this btennium. A request of Dr. K. Alien Bate-man, Bate-man, state superintendent of instruction, in-struction, that the Item be restored re-stored has been denied by the governor. ' Besert to Coort Action Meeting late Friday at the state capital, board members strongly Implied they will resort to court action to fet the 120.000, adding, m a letter to the governor: "It Is clear that any Inconvenience Inconven-ience and suspension of services in this or other departments which may result from a court decision of this problem will solely be your responsibility ..." The reference to "other departments" depart-ments" would Include such services serv-ices as the farm extension work at Utah State Agricultural college col-lege and research and extension work at University of Utah where the appropriation for Stewart training school also may be Involved. Board Accepts A proposal of Governor Lee that a survey be conducted to determine what economies can be effected In the department of education was accepted by the board of education, educa-tion, as it 'recalled a similar proposal pro-posal had previously been made by Dr. Beteman, . Governor Lee obtained" permission permis-sion from the board of examiners to proceed with the survey and name a committee to supervise the work. |
