Goon can mean, "a stupid person; a roughneck; a hired hoodlum used by one side or the other in a labor dispute." Professional, Pro-fessional, strong-arm pickets are often referred to as goons. Union members use the term goon in peaking of special hard-boiled guards hired by struck plants. So far as I know the word goon was the Invention of the late E. a Segar (1894-1S38), originator of the Popeye comic strip. His goon was a fabulous and gigantic birdlike creature. Kensington Do you agree with Dr. Q. W. Crane that one should say, "Put your better foot forward" for-ward" because one has only two feet? Mrs. O. M. A. Certainly not! That's splitting split-ting hairs with a very dull blade. "Put your best foot forward" is an Idiomatic expression that has been good usage for many a long year. It has excellent dictionary sanction.
