Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett I haven't been able to write lately on account of a bad arm, ; but couldn't pass up this oppor-i oppor-i tunity of telling the people of Bingham Canyon what a swell American Legion team Coach j Bailey Santistevan has put to-! to-! gethe'r. Here is a team that Bingham Bing-ham should be proud of. They I won the state championship at Brigham City last week-end and I they did it in a fashion that left no doubt in anyone's mind as to who had the best team. Thye took Ogden in the first game, 10 to 4, and in this encounter en-counter they showed that they had what it takes. Going into the sixth inning they were behind 4 to 0 with Van Workman, the Ogden pitcher, breezing. But in the sixth he weakened just B trifle and they jumped on him with both feet. When the dust cleared at the end of the inning the score read 6 to 4 for Brigham. Brig-ham. The local boys scored four more runs in the game, but they were anti-climactic. After the sixth young Bailey Santistevan really went to work, and backed by wonderful support he stopped stop-ped Ogden cold. The next day, against Magna, the result was never in doubt. With Kenny Hall and Victor Ro-blez Ro-blez hitting the Magna pitcher just like they owned him, the local boys ran up an 11 to 0 count in six innings. Roblez got four for four and Hall had three for four, one of them a home run. And believe me that ball was a fair drive for a horse and buggy. Stoddard had them shut out when he left the game in the seventh with a sprained ankle. The final score was 18 to 2 for Bingham. In the championship against Brigham City it was too much Santistevan. This big boy stood out on the mound and poured that fast ball past the Brigham City boys all afternoon. And the rest of the team played like the champions they are. The final score read 7 to 0 and that about tells the story. Highlights: The Bingham infield in-field came up with some great plays. Jack Knudsen on third made a great play against Ogden Og-den on a ball that was hit like a shot down the line. Jack came up with it one handed and threw the man out. Stillman on short looked good on every ground ball. There hasn't been enough credit cre-dit given George Dimas on second sec-ond for Bingham. He came up with every thing that came his I way in th etournament and he is a 1 good looking hitter. Victor Roblez, our catcher, caught the eye of one or two scouts. This fellow has a great arm for a kid. Ray on first for Bingham didn't hit in the tournament like he can, but Admiral played great ball in the field. A 14-year-old boy from Brigham Brig-ham City, Morris Powers, looks like a great prospect. He has a fine arm and is a good hitter. Throw-s left handed and bats left handed. Has two more years in Legion ball. We'll hear of him, plenty- Young and Owens ars two more good boys for Brigham Brig-ham City Brown was the best looking boy for Provo. Pitched and played play-ed infield. Helper and Price were eliminated elimin-ated the first day, but. they had a swell bunch of boys. Van Workmen of Ogden is a good lookino ball player and a nice boy. Bingham was the best coached team, and again I say, "Congratulations, "Congratu-lations, Sandy." The boys go to Denver for the sectional tournament. tourna-ment. What say we "ive them a bip send off. Let them know we are proud of them and behind them to a man. |
