Show Are County Peace Officers Blind? There Is a state law in Utah which bans the sale or possession of fireworks except for toy pistols and guns, ' toy canes ' and sparklers. There are laws likewise in Salt Lake county and in Salt Lake City forbidding fireworks sale or possession. In Salt Lake City the law is pretty well enforced as far as actual sale, of fireworks goes, although not too mnch effort-is made to control the possession and use of fireworks by individuals who purchase them in some manner regardless of the legal ban. In the city the fire department keeps a pretty close eye on the sale of. fireworks because be-cause they have found from! long experience ex-perience that such sales add up to a lot of extra work in the way of fighting grass fires, garagafires and even home fires started by fireworks. Out in the county, however, there seems mighty little enforcement activity. Citizen observers recently reported a number of fly-by-night establishments were selling fireworks in disregard of the law on South State street, on Highland High-land drive, in Holladay and in Magna. One alleged vendor was arrested in South Salt Lake by the town marshal-but only after the law violation reportedly was called to the attention of the South Salt Lake officers by the Salt Lake City police department. . Apparently our peace officers out in the county are either blind or they are deliberately ignoring the anti-fireworks law. It isn't a good situation any way you look at it It doesn't encourage respect re-spect for law in the youngsters who,, knowing sale is illegal, patronize these open fireworks establishments. It isn't fair to the legitimate businessmen who obey the law and lose out on profitable trade. We either ought to enforce this fireworks ban vigorously and uniformly or we ought to forget it entirely. |
