Show Korea Has Mobilized Peace-Loving Nations in Resistance to Aggression The visit to Salt Lake City of five-star five-star Admiral Cheater .W. Nimlti should help Utahns to understand what is going on. in Korea and the Important role the United Nations has been, and is, playinf there. Admiral NimiU said flatly that if the bold action to halt the North Korean - aggression were the only thing the United Unit-ed Nations had done "it would justify the organization's existence." The U. N. has of course done much more as the admiral explained but It is a fact that its prestige has been greatly enhanced by the Korean incident. It has become a formidable force to block, by deeds as well as words, any act of aggression anywhere in the world. Just how formidable it will be, depends de-pends on the outcome of the present fighting In Korea, Admiral Nlmltx gave It as his opinion that Korea Is the "cru- eial teat"- for the United Nations, He-said He-said It is also a decisive factor on the question of a third world war. He believes be-lieves that if aggression can be successfully success-fully countered by the U. N. in Korea it will give the smaller nations of the world confidence and hope, building such a strong bloc of peace-maintaining free nations that aggressive communism will not dare challenge them. Whether or not this is a fair estimate of the situation. It Is certainly a fact that every effort must be made to unite the free nations of the world, under the U. N. banner, in the fight against Communist aggression. If their united stand does give Russia pause, and avert a great war, well and good. If it fails, we will at least be standing together in resistance to the Russian challenge and therefore in better position to meet it. Admiral NimiU likewise cleared up the question of who started the shooting In Korea if there' are any Utahns who still have doubts on the matter. He reminded us that the United NaUons had a commission on the scene In Korea the morning of June 24 and that this commission com-mission had just completed an inspection of the frontier. The commission reported that South Korean military forces were deployed along the border in purely defensive de-fensive formations and there was no plan or preparation for an attack. The attack came from the north. This fact of on-the-spot U. N. reporting report-ing of what is going on in the world is of the utmost importance. In these days of superlatives in propaganda, lies and double-talk, it is important to have an unbiased, multi-national agency able to cut through the propaganda smokescreens smoke-screens and camouflage and tell the world the truth about what is going on. Undoubtedly it was the fact of U. N. representation on the scene in Korea which resulted in such a swift mobilization mobiliza-tion of overwhelming world opinion on tha aids of resist anna- to this Communist aggression. To date S3- nations have lined up In support of U. N. action in Korea, with only three nations, Russia, Poland and Czechoslovakia, opposed. To date half a dozen nations have fighting forces engaged in South Korea and at least 19 have offered combat forces, medical units or transport fa-cilities fa-cilities to the U. N. The roll of nations which have made such offers as listed by Admiral NimiU included, beside the United SUtes and Britain, the following: Thailand, Turkey, Philippines, New Zealand, Zea-land, Australia, France, Netherlands, Canada, Belgium, Bolivia, Coats Rica, Denmark, Greece, India, Norway, Panama, Pana-ma, Sweden and South Africa. The physical and moral force of the world is for the first time in history being mobilized in time of peace for re-sisUncs re-sisUncs to aggression. It could prove a turning point not only in the battle against Communist Imperialism, but in the long history of mankind's battle for peace. v |
