Show '47 Crop Outlook Bright, Says Farm Official Whether price levels will make the agricultural gamble pay well during 194? depends upon contingencies contin-gencies to be answered early in the year, but prospects for bounteous boun-teous crops on farms throughout Utah are excellent, according to Prank O. Shelley, executive secretary, secre-tary, Utah State Farm bureau. After a good year in 1946, most farmers are watching prices for selection of 1947 crops. An anticipated an-ticipated boost both in the price and saccarlne content of sugar beets probably will see an even larger sugar beet crop than In 1946. About 11,000 acres of winter m-fceat have been planted In Salt Lake county and bode an excellent excel-lent 1947 crop. The winter wheat outlook also is good In other Utah sections, Mr. Shelley said. While a financial debacle during 1946 harvests of celery and onions, caused by bumper crops, probably will keep down planting of these Items, and the same is true of the potato crop, Mr. Shelley said, other weak spots appear to be the sheep and poultry Industry. Also, selection of canning crops by farmers peas and tomatoes In the case of Salt Lake county-will county-will await Indication of how successfully suc-cessfully canned goods have been marketed. |
