Rejoicing over the 'undaunted spirit displayed dis-played by General Stoessel in his '(-gram '(-gram of congratulation to Emperor Nicholas Nich-olas on the anniversary of his acceesloa ' to the thron. and officially announcing ' the failure of General XoglW -nine-day attempt to present Port Arthur to the Mikado as a birthday gift, la tempered by private information that the gmilaat commander of the garrison - has ben wounded. General Stoessel was struck In the head by a splinter from a shell, while h. was ; personally directing the repulse of a particularly par-ticularly desperate assault, but fortunately fortunate-ly the wound Is not serious and General Sloessel has not been obliged to relln-' quish command. General Stoessel is re- i carded as the heart and soul of the defense, de-fense, and his death or disability, which : would cause him to relinquish command, would be regarded as an Irremediable I misfortune.
