A week or ten days ago a store on the West side was burglarised, and five fifty-pound sacks of flour were taken through a broken window. Patrolmen detailed to investigate the case found a threadlike trail of flour leading to the woodshed of Mrs. Davis' humble home, three blocks distant Mrs. Davis said that when she went to her woodshed the morning following the burglary of the store, she Vas surprised sur-prised to find 250 pounds of flour there. This she took into the house. The woman, who is the support of a family of children, was almost destitute of provisions and looked upon the flour as a Godsend. Her arrest followed. Upon her arraignment ar-raignment she pleaded not guilty and was released on her own recognisance. The case was Bet for hearing this morning. In the meantime the polioe and Prosecutor Dana T. Smith pursued a rigid investigation and were finally convinced that the woman : told the truth when she said she did not know how the flour got to her shed. It is believed that some person who knew of her destitution, and 'who had not the means to provide for her, risked a term in the penitentiary to furnish her with flour for the family. |
