The Australian eucalyptus tree ha been . naturalized in CaUfornla, and there are now towering groves of eucalyptus euca-lyptus in Arisona. aad parte of Mexico as welL The great value of. the eucalyptus euca-lyptus lies in its remarkably quick growth from the seed to the full-sized tree. Travelers in Australia nave brought back accounts of enorinous nar tive- eucalyptus. There was a record of one prostrate ancient forest gfcnt of the blue gum variety measuring, "with allowances for the lost top. 550 f ewt. Such a giant would have overtopped tbe tallest of California's living sequoias. There are more than 150 kinds of eucalyptus euca-lyptus which resemble each other, though differing widely In size, height, general outline and in appearance of leaf and bark. ' This tree is planted for forest cover for naked hillsides, as windbreakers and hedges, the timber Is valuable, the wood and leaves make excellent ex-cellent fuel, and from the latter Is made a drug extensively employed in medicine medi-cine and surgery. The blossoms supply honey, supposed to possess specially hygienic hy-gienic properties. |
