Show ' WASHES" FCSTEB'S KICK. Editor Telegram: Possibly no eight words ever compiled expresses a bigger lie than the words, "If it happens it in the Herald." I wis hto call the readers attention to the fact that less than ten days ago Prof. Walter Thomas Mills, one of the most noted campaign speakers and writers on political economy In the United States, made two speeches on "Socialism" at the Grand theater in this city. The house was packed from the floor to the shingles on both evenings, notwithstanding notwith-standing the fact that the seats were sold for 10 cents each. So important a happening as this was utterly Ignored by the Herald. Not because "it did not happen," not because the Herald reporters' re-porters' did not know it but simply be cause the Herald managers thought it would be a smart thing to ignore it Consequently no mention was made of his coming, of his speech or of his going. This evinces a narrowness in journalistic journal-istic cussednese seldom found in this or any other country. The object of it, no doubt was to treat the Socialist party of this State with rilent contempt, and thereby lessen their vote, and possibly increase the vote of the Democratic ticket Now, as a Socialist and one who feels the slight, I desire to call the Herald's attention to the fact that Just the opposite oppo-site remits will follow. There is not a Socialis in the State that does not feel the Insult, and they will vote the Socialist So-cialist ticket stronger than they ever did, as far as the ticket goes, and they will certainly not fill up the. blanks of their tickets with the names of Democratic Demo-cratic candidates either. It seems that there has an order gone forth from Democratic headquarters for this thing to be done. On last Friday evening the writer had the honor to address ad-dress a very large crowd at Ogden. The Ogden Standard, a Republican paper, made fair mention of the Incident, both of our coming and going, but the Journal, Jour-nal, a Democratic paperk made no mention men-tion of the meeting whatever, notwithstanding notwith-standing the fact I spent several hours In the panctum of the Journal office. Some time ago, during the coal strike, the writer wrote an article discussing the situation, and took it to the manager man-ager of the Herald, but he positively refused re-fused to even look at it, and when asked if his paper was not open to the dis-cus-eion of live questions, answered, "Yes; but from our point of view only." So, if the Democrats of this State desire to take up the cudgel of silent contempt against the Socialists, we accept the issue, and gladly. WARREN FOSTER. |
