Show President Lucas of Pacific National Na-tional League, Orders Him i to Officiate Today. i , . President Lucas of the Pacific National Nation-al league'has telegraphed Managing: Director Di-rector Griffin of the Salt Lake club, stating that the Salt Lake club must furnish sufficient police attendance to protect the umpire In games in this city. He winds up his wire with the emphatic phrase "I demand it" He had also ordered or-dered Umpire Jones to report for duty at Walker' field this afternoon. , Ha Several Affidavits. Mr. Griffln has a number of affidavits from citizens stating that they heard Jones declare his intention of giving Salt Lake the worst of the decisions and has . proposed to Manager McClos-key McClos-key of the Boise team to allow two I players, one from each team, to umpire, but in the face of President Lucas' order or-der he cannot make this arrangement. i The firt game of the season was umpired um-pired In this .manner and there was no trouble whatever. - ' ' Forfeit Endangered. Mr. Griffin is powerleos to prevent Umpire Jones officiating if he once takes charge of the game, and should he r-fuse r-fuse to admit Jones to the grounds hev would render the club liable to forfeit v the $1000 which is deposited as a guarantee guar-antee by each club. After the. umpire goes upon the field and announces the batteries for the day he is in entire charge and represents the president of the league, and if Umpire . Jones does this Mr. Griffin will afford him all the protection in his power. If, however, the crowd prevents Jone from entering the grounds the game will have to be played anyway and in ca that occurred it is likely that one player from each team would officiate. - |
