Show Soppertias th Fmily. . 'The assertion was made before a recent meeting meet-ing of the National Commercial Teachers' Federation Fede-ration by N. W. Ferris, defeated Democratic candidate candi-date for Governor of Michigan, that a woman should not marry until she is able to support a husband. He did not make it in a spirit of levity or satire, but gave as bis reason that there should be preparation for possible future misfortune. , A great many of the girls who marry nowadays ere qualified to be breadwinners. The ranks of the wage-earning women have grown to large proportions propor-tions within the last decade. There are women school teachers, bookkeepers and stenographers galore ga-lore but few of them take up such pursuits as life work. They do not like the work and if they are . honest in their statements they will almost inva-' inva-' rwbly admit they expect to marry. It is not that they have crowded men out of positions, but the business of the- country has become so great and is cf such a diversified character that the places have been made for the women. They are a factor in j commercial life and their employment is no longer an experiment. Woman in business work is an in-Btitution. in-Btitution. "V Marriage, however, is the goal and the ambition 0 of most normal young women.,. There is no reason V jhy:it should not be. Marriage is not a failure. ' bivorce court statistics may be cited but there are "Vetatistics of the number of happy marriages. At anSate, most of the young men and women of the counSyare willing to take the risk. A business trainingWi not. prevent a woman from making a good wifeVr should her wifely duties prevent her from being ate to be the head of 'the house should - ynfonfeen misWtune overtake th husband. Many a woman has mad the living while her husband was ill and many a deserted wife has had to provide pro-vide for herself and her children. A Mr. Ferris' suggestion is not unreasonable but Jl should not have the effect of causing young men to regard marriage in the light of an undertaking in which they do not have the largest responsibility. The man Is the natural breadwinner and provider. It is his duty to look to the future when entering ; the matrimonial state. He. should have life Insurance Insur-ance and there are many other kinds that are well to carry if possible, such as accident and health. There are many fraternal orders that provide medical medi-cal attendance and sick benefits. By beirig less of .ft "good fellow" with' "the boys" and making preparation pre-paration for the alwayl likely rainy day, the young husband can preclude the possibility of his wife having to make the living. . . But all young husbands are. not perfect and the incomes of many are smalL- it will not tend to make the marriage unhappy if in an emergency the wife can keep the wolf from the door. |
