Show CAUCASIAN AND NEGRO j CHICAGO SOCIETY WOMEN" INVITE NEGROES AS QUESTS TO RECEPTION AND LUNCHE0NBUT FIRST OP SERIES OP ENTERTAINMENTS. $ Club women who. figure prominently In meetings and conventions of women's wo-men's organizations, and who are rated In Chicago as social leaden, mingled on terms of equality with thirty-three negro women, the Invited guests of Mrs. Henry McGee, gossiped with them of art and literature and chatted on the sub-Jects sub-Jects of the day. The white women at Mrs. McGee's home were member, of the Frederick Douglass Center club. Mrs. McGee was the hostess of the day, and she exhibited the art treasures and relics which she has gathered In her travels. When Mrs. McGee had finished speaking of her recent trip to the St Louis exposition ex-position and of her experiences in foreign lands afternoon tea was served, the white and negro women occupying alternate seats. The friendliness of the white club women had put the colored women at their ease, and they talked freely of the possibility of equality of the two races. The Frederick Douglass Center club motto reads: "With malice toward .none, with charity for all." The object of the club la to remove the prejudice which exists against negroes in political po-litical and industrial life. The following are the officers: Cella Parker Woolley, president; Dr. Charles E. Bentley, secretary; Mary Redfield Plummer, treasurer; treas-urer; John O'Connor, S. Laing Williams, F. L. Barnett. Elizabeth L. Davis, directors. di-rectors. When her white and colored guests had gone, Mrs. McGee was asked If she believed the negro women who had Just departed were on a basis of equality equal-ity with herself. She replied that she believes the colored people should be given every chance to elevate themselves, and that they should not be excluded from the society of white people of culture. Jane Addams, Clarence Darrow, Mrs. Julius Rosenthal, Dr. Lucy Walte and Ellen M. Henroiln are enrolled as members of the club. More receptions will be held and each time the colored women will be Invited to attend. |
