Nov. 1 Jimmy Britt ai California lost the lightweight championship cham-pionship of the world last night when he fouled Joe Gans. He .had sent Oans to his knees in the fifth round and then losing his head gave him a vicious punch, and Referee Graney promptly , awarded the fight to Cans on a foul. The same tilng had happened in the fourth round ana had dropped ' to his knees to escape blow that did not land. Brttt struck at him, but Graney-vould not allow the foul. In the next round, however, Graney ! very promptly recog nized the foul fighting. fight-ing. '-.," It looked almost from the start as if It were Britt's fight He actually outboxed Oans and landed blow after blow. In the fourth round it was apparent that Gans was scared and barring a foul the fight was Britt's to a certainty. While no excuse ex-cuse can be made for Britt losing nls 'head, it certainly teemed that Gang invited in-vited a foul. The decision was a great shock to the biggest crowd that ever filled the pavilion, but fair-minded men agreed that Graney's Judgment was just. Britt Showed Great Strength. Britt showed marvelous strength and i quickness. I He went at Gans like a bull-terrier, bull-terrier, landing body blows, alternating with swings on the jaw. During the tirst three rounds Gana appeared cool and confident con-fident and fairly strong. He appeared to be feeling Britt out. but at qie end of the third and early in the fourth when Britt commenced to fight more viclous.y than ever, Gans weakened perceptibly. He landed a few times on Britt. but the little white boy paid no attention to the -ojored man s light taps and every time ue was hit bored in more viciously than evtr. There la no doubt In the minds of the majority of those present that in another contest at the same weights, Britt would defeat Gans easily. Referee Graney said after the fight. 1 really should have given Gans the decision de-cision In the fourth round when Britt fouled him. but as Gans was not hurt I overlooked It, though Britt . himself admitted ad-mitted that I could have called a foul at, that time. The second Offense Jn the fifth round was so palpable, however, that I was forced to give Gans the decision." Britt Attack Graney. Britt was frantic with rage when he realised that he had lost the fight and he rushed at Graney striking wildly. Graney, - who is something of a boxer nimseif, fought back, but the police Interfered In-terfered and separated the belligerents. "Young Corbett" jumped Into the ring as soon as Gans appeared and issued a challenge the winner of the battle. bat-tle. Gans's appearance was none too inviting. in-viting. His face looked pinched and drann and his general appearance showed plainly the effects of hard training. Jimmy Gardner and Mike (Twin) Sullivan Sulli-van also challenged the winner of the fitht The scales were brought to the center of the stage and 1 the men were weighed in in full view of the public. The scales were pet at the 133-pound mark. Gana Jumped on and as he failed to raise the beam, it showed that he was under the required re-quired weight. The exact figures were not taken. . At 9:29 o'clock Britt entered the ring and immediately Jumped on the scales. Like Gans, he failed to raise the beam at the 133-pound mark, Britt looked a trifle nervous, -but physically no fault could be found. At the ringside bets were made at even money that Gans would win within fifteen rounds. Britt was introduced, as the feather-weight champion of the world. Gans was presented as the lightweight champion of the world. Time was called at 9:4S. Bound One. . Britt went at once Into his favorite crouch and they sparred for some time. Britt shot his left twice in quick succession succes-sion to Gans's body, but they were not forcible. After some more sparring Britt hooked his left to the body again and followed it with -right for the head. Then, like a flash. Britt shot his left to the body and misled a right for the head. Gans, apparently, was sizing up Britt's reach. Gans miseed a straight right for the head. Britt was short with left for the body and missed a left for the head as the bell ra"hg. The work in this round was light. Britt having a slight advantage. advan-tage. Gans permitted Britt to do most of the work. Britt's Hows were of a light nature and did no harm. Biund Two. Britt missed left and right for the body and they went to a clinch. Britt suddenly sudden-ly lunged his left to the head and then brought it to the body. Gans continued to force Britt about the ring and they came to a clinch, without result. Britt misled a left hook for the body and then sent a straight left to Gans's nose, Gans retaliating with lt-ft to th body. Britt drove linns back with a left swing to the body. Britt bored In. scoring with left and" ripht to the wind. In the mix both exchanged rights and lefts to the face. Britt missed a vicious left for the bodv. They came together, Britt missing left and right for the body. A rally in the center of the-ring followed. Britt landing right and left on the face as the bell rang, but not before he had received a straight lrft to the head. Britt did most of the loading in this rosnd. The honors were shout even, however. Bound Three. , Thcv mixed It fiercely at close quarters, both "doing some very clever blocking. Gans got in a good rljrht to the body, but Britt retaliated with' straight left hard to the stomach. They mixed It again, Britt putting left and right to the bodv. An Ineffectual mix followed. Britt ceught Gans with a terrific right to the Jaw, dazing the colored man. He followed fol-lowed the advantage with a right and left swing to the head, forcing Gans to a clinch. Britt rushed In fighting wildly. He bombarded Gans's face and body with right and left swings and put some punishing pun-ishing rights over he heart. Britt, at close quarters greatly distressed Gans with a fearful right over the body. Gans clung desperately to Britt to avoid punishment pun-ishment and the gong found them In this position. It was all Britt's Tound. Round Four. Britt waded In fiercely, rushing Gans to he ropes with a heavy left over the heart. He then missed right and left swings' for the body. Britt kept himself well covered and was a puzzle to Gans. Britt sent Gans back with a succession of rights and lefts- to the face and a left to the body. In this round Britt hit Gans accidentally ac-cidentally while Gens was down, but a -laim of foul was disallowed. Gans was in- distress and the gong saved him. Hound Five. Thev mixed fiercely. Britt rushed at Graney like a roadman and fought him to the ropes. A iuad of police immediately Jumped Into -he ring and It looked as If there would e a general fight. The house gave vent o Its disapproval by tremendous hooting hoot-ing and wilcly cheered Britt as he went o the center of the ring. Gate Beceipts Heavy. Rough estimates of the gate receipts place the amount at about $35,000.
