Show ELECTRIC LIGHT TRUST CALLED UPON THE CARPET Councilman Martin's Resolution as Presented to That V ' Body, Will Force an Explanation The electric light trust wax haled up on the carpet last night lnthe City Council, and an Investigation will now be probably set afoot to learn why the trust charges full rates for street lights, when the lights are not kept burning throughout the city as they should be. j Could Not Explain. - j Councilman Martin, who had prepared pre-pared a resolution on the matter, said In the Council last night that he had been approached by a representative of a company, who endeavored to explain to him why all the arc lights are not kept burning as required by the provisions provi-sions of the franchise. Councilman Martin said that he deemed the explanation unsatisfactory, and he, accordingly, Introduced the following fol-lowing resolution, which, after its reading, read-ing, was referred to the Committee on Improvements, with the city light In- ' spector associated: I Here's the Resolution. Whereas. The Utah Light and Power company, either through lack of competition competi-tion or fo- other reasons unknown to the maker of this resolution, seems to be of the opinion that It may with impunity violate not only the requirements of the franchises under which It operates, but also its contract with the city for street lighting; and. Whereas, The published promises of the management of this corporation, that existing ex-isting conditions would be Improved seems only to have the effect of making theso conditions worse; and. Whereas, There can be no question but that the citizens, like the city, are being be-ing compelled to pay a first-class price for a lighting service and are receiving what could not under any possible construction con-struction of the word be classed as service; ser-vice; and. Whereas, One of the franchises through which this corporation was given life promises as follows: First That the acceptance ac-ceptance by it of the privileges granted in said franchise is a promise or contract con-tract to, in return for said privileges, furnish fur-nish the citlxens of 8alt Lake City with gas or electrlo light service of the best I ?Kalty .? n?.
