Show EXPERIMENTS WITH NEW METAL MARVEL Ka.rvciou3 Exhibition Given by German Ger-man Scientist With Small Spec! cf Polonium. BERLIN. June 8. At Sunday- aes-' rion of the CheFjicsl i ongress. Prof. W. Markwsid ;cf Berlin showed to the electro-chemical and physical section a smudge of dark powder pow-der on a piece of paper which was the first tima any of those eminent " scientists had Been . the metal polonium, discovered by Prof, and Madame Curie of Paris. - The latter doubted whether polonium wa a primary pri-mary element, or related to bismuth, but Prof. Markwald demonstrated that ; It was indeed a primary element. He exhibited a bit of metal weighing- 15-100 of a grain, which waa produced from two tons of uranium at a cost of4)75. It is more sparsely distributed in uranium ura-nium than xenon, the most ratified gas, is in the atmosphere. Prof. Markwald proceeded to give a marvelous exhibition of the powers of his sfceck of polonium. .It Intercepted a strotig current of electricity passing tlU?C5h the air from the generator to the receiver, the air ceasing to be a conductor for the flashes. The room waa then darkened and pieces of barium, platinum and zinc blende placed near the polonium glowed . with a bright, greenish light. The assemblage of chemists were thrilled with astonishment, astonish-ment, It appeared to be a miracle. |
