James, president of the Inter-Denominational Council of Women for Christian and patriotic service, ser-vice, was In Salt Lake from June 1st to June ith and left for her home In New Tork yesterday. The object of Mrs. James visit here was to make a personal Investigation of local conditions bearing upon the charges made 'against Apostle Reed Smoot, In the protest against his being given a seat In the Senate, now filed with the Committee on Privileges and Elections. , Investigated the Charges. While Mrs. James did not court any, . publicity during her stay In Salt Lake, -she made a careful and searching Inquiry In-quiry into the charges that the president presi-dent and numerous apostles of the Mormon church are now living in polygamy po-lygamy and that every apostle and high official of this organization connives at or countenances the continuance of the plural marriage relation. The Rev. Dr. William M. Paden, pastor pas-tor of the First Presbyterian church, assisted Mrs. James in her study of local lo-cal conditions and supplied her with information in-formation in relation to the alleged existing practice of polygamy. Mrs. James says she Is confident that "through the efforts of the women, the ministers and the various Christian organisations that have taken up the battle for the American home, public sentiment will be roused to such an . extent that the Senate will not refuse to heed the voice of the people and declare de-clare Apostle Smoot disqualified to sit. as Senator."
