Show CECIL RHODES' AGENT HERE TO EELF AWARD OXFORD SCHOLARSHIPS G. R. Parkin, who has charge of the disposition of the scholarship to Oxofrd university for which Cecil Rhodes, the late South 'African millionaire, left $7,000,-000, $7,000,-000, arrived In Salt Lake last night from California, where he has been in conference con-ference with representatives of all the Western institutions of learning, and is today In conference with President Kingsbury of the University of Utah discussing discus-sing the method of choosing the young men who will 'be sent to that famous Institution of learning- "' ' ' ' . - ' A f The first year there will only be one young man sent from here. He will take up his residence at Oxford next October. Fifteen hundred dollars will be allowed him each year for. his maintenance and he will be allowed three years to complete his course of study. On each succeeding year two young men will be given the same opportunity. ..'.' Mr. Parkin said this morning that Cecil Rhodes' idea In dedicating this vast sum of money to this use was. to bring the young men of England and America together that they might become better acquainted. - ' By this means he hoped that the bond between the two countries might be strengthened. His idea was that everyone who took advantage of his offer should be sound In limb and wind as well as Intelligent. Thus the examinations will include athletics. . 1 The university he chose for the- place of meeting requires any one wishing to enter to have studied Latin and Greek. As the University of Utah is the only large institution in the State that teaches these languages the representatives from Utah will be chosen from the students of that Institution. , |
