Show A FORCED MARRIAGL. As outlined by the dispatches yesterday, the Statehood bill will pass amended, in a way to force the union of New Mexico and Arizona. New Mexico is notoriously in favor of pie combination; Arizona is hostile to it. But" the proposed enabling act will allow the men of the two Territories to frame a Constitution Con-stitution for the one State, and it gives New Mexico sixty-six delegates and Arizona forty -four. Of course, New Mexico will control the convention, conven-tion, and then when it comes to a vote on the acceptance ac-ceptance of the Constitution New Mexico will outvote out-vote Arizona, to accomplish the purpose which certain cer-tain Eastern members of Congress 'have been working work-ing for all through this session, to force all the territory ter-ritory belonging to both Arizona and New Mexico into one great State. If that is to be, Congress had better draw a line straight south from the west boundary of Wyoming to the southern boundary of Colorado, and then attach at-tach the portion east of that line to Colorado, then cut off the Arizona strip and cede it to Utah. This last ought certainly to be, because that strip is of no value to Arizona, it would be of much value to Utah, and the Colorado river is the natural boundary of the two political divisions. |
