Show PAY OF RETIRED MILITARY OFFICERS In time of peace there Is always a kick coming because of the money paid to retired army and navy officers. There is one on now, in and out of Congress. Con-gress. The fact that a man devotes his life to his country; that he holds himself in readiness to offer his life whenever called upon jn that service is forgotten. for-gotten. ; For half a dozen years prior to the Mexican war the. papers were filled with denunciations of West Point and many charged that it was merely a nursery nur-sery for fops and idleness. ; The war came on. It was but a series of American victories, every one of which was won against tremendous odds. But never was there such a loss of officers in comparison with the losses of the rank and file. When the figures were scanned the clamor against West Point ceased. A faithful soldier who serves his country until the age of retirement is entitled to the care' and protection protec-tion of his Government, while life lasts. ' |
