Mrs. Snow discovered that there was a fire in her basement Saturday afternoon. after-noon. She called to the boy, who was passing on the other side of the street, to come and help her get a garden hose trained on the fire. The boy seised the hose, dashed into the cellar, and, surrounded sur-rounded by smoke and flame, fought the fire single-handed until-the arrival' of the fire department. The Chief of the department rescued the boy, blinded and choking from the smoke, and asked his name. "My name's Freddie," he gasped, and then, when-ha was left for a moment, disappeared. Freddie did a great deal " to keep the flames in check until the arrival ar-rival of the department, and but for his - promptness and heroism the house VJuld have" been badly damaged. The flrfe was caused by hot ashes falling on ev pile of papers and boxes in the cellar. |
