Show NEW YORK IS PROSPEROUS , , Report of the State Department De-partment ,of Labor Shows ImproTcmcnt. ALBANY. N. Y., Oct 2.-In its last quarterly bulletin, published today, the. State Department of Labor calls attention atten-tion to a marked Improvement in trad, which began in the middle of 1904 and has continued almost uninterruptedly. The department says that now there are relatively fewer idle wage-earners In New York than there were even in 1902, the most prosperous year of the decade. - Returns to the bureau of labor statistics statis-tics from trades unions . embracing a hiembershlp of about' 100.000 wage-earn-, ere in the various occupations show that the average monthly number of unemployed unem-ployed members was only 151 per 1000 In .the first half of 1906 as compared with 20! last year and 168 In 1902. . In building and construction, which probably employs mon men at present than any other New York industry, tr volume of production has been unusually large. In the months of April, May and June work was begun on 7316 buildings In New York City, as compared with 6164 a year ago. The estimated cost of projected buildings- for which plans were approved and permits Issued In the second quarter quar-ter of 1906 attained the amazing sum of 178. 7.896. In the other large cities building operations oper-ations are well above the average. |
