Show SAVSHiL(iERT,W-!l)rWK2 SO-CALLED MAGIC BOOTS, IS FAR FROfl A "P AKE" A well-known business man of this city who has Just returned from an extensive ex-tensive Eastern trip said to a reporter of The Telegram today that he had been entertained by Prof. Hilgert,' the "magic boot", man, while In New York and that he was surprised to read the local stories regarding the man's early career In Salt Lake. "I have been lame for a good many years as the result of an accident in early life, and while Prof. Hilgert was in business in Salt Lake I found him to be the only man capable of fitting me with a suitable boot. Hilgert was no cheap man, and when he found out Just what I needed In the way of foot- wear, he promptly Informed me that it would cost me $26 a pair for my boots. Having no other alternative I was glad to get something in which I could walk comfortably, and gladly paid the price demanded -for my boots, always finding Hilgert's work entirely to my .satisfaction. .satis-faction. "One day Hilgert informed me that he was going to leave this place and embark in business In some of the larger Eastern cities, -as this was entirely en-tirely too small a place for him to ply his trade. , "While I was prowling around New York a few days ago, I was much surprised sur-prised to see a large store building in the business section of the city taken up by the Hilgert sanitarium. Going Into this large establishment I found my old shoemaker, Hilgert. with a large force of expert shoemakers and an osteopath tf treat all forms of deformed de-formed feet. . "He has an immense business, and he took me all through his establishment, which had no signs of fakery about it. True, Hilgert has amassed a fortune, but from a recent case tried in the courts of New York, in which the Jury awarded him a verdict for $5000 on a contract from a rich man who had voluntarily vol-untarily agreed to pay Hilgert this amount, provided the man was provide ed with boots in which he could walk, it would seem that he is conducting a legitimate business. "He has his two daughters with him and has provided a beautiful home for them. He was divorced from his wife several years ago, the courts giving him the verdict, and the whole affair was made known to the public at the time, when the court awarded him the custody of the children. I have always found him a trustworthy person, and a man who paid all his debts, and feel that a great wrong has been done him by some of the people who are evidently evident-ly Jealous of his success." |
