Show INDIANA HARBOR POOLROOM RAIDED Sheriff Dougherty and Deputies Nab Crowd From Chicago. CHICAGO, Nov. 18. Indiana Harbor is not to be the haven of refuge for th.j exiled bookmakers of Chicago. Sheriff Dougherty of Lake county. Indiana, yesterday went on the warpath and "cleaned out" the Indiana Harbor poolroom, pool-room, arresting fifty men. The raid was made in sensational form. At the head of twenty-five deputies, with drawn revolvers, the Sheriff entered the room. The room was filled with men and all was activity. When the Sheriff and his men broke in. most of the men yielded because they could see no way of escape. The raid was unexpected, and preparations to foil the officers had not been prepared. pre-pared. Only one of the men In the place got away. He dashed to the second sec-ond floor and leaped out of a window. As as soon as Sheriff Dougherty had made his "round-up," he called In Justice Jus-tice Homer Ansdey and court was convened con-vened in the poolroom. With dispatch the magistrate decided ! on a fine of J20.D0 for each man. The names were read off. the fines called off without show of defense, and the keep-.ers keep-.ers of the place came forward with such grace as they could muster and paid the penalties. Then Justice Ans-ley Ans-ley adjourned court and the gamblers betook themselves to trains for Chicago. Chi-cago. The poolroom has been advertised adver-tised extensively but quietly and train facilities to the suburb have been provided pro-vided over two railroads. |
